One of the UK’s leading eco-friendly tourism destinations, Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant has won numerous awards for its sustainability, including a VisitEngland Award for Excellence.
STAY
The hotel combines a warm welcome and has a true passion for all things local and sustainable – from the local beers in the bar to the salad, fruit and vegetables are grown in the hotel’s own garden. Battlesteads is the only hotel in the country with its own on-site observatory and offers a wide range of courses and experience days throughout the year. There are 22 en-suite rooms, including five luxury eco-lodges. All the rooms are individually furnished with their own unique character, and there are ground floor fully accessible rooms and several dog-friendly rooms to choose from as well. Make the most of your stay at Battlesteads and visit the hotel’s on-site observatory for an evening of stargazing – there is a range of courses available for all abilities and, on a clear night, you can even see the Milky Way with the naked eye.
Double en-suite rooms start from £120 per room, per night, while luxury eco-lodges are available from £170 per room, per night (bed and breakfast).
EAT
For a true taste of Northumberland’s finest food and local ingredients, Battlesteads is the place to go. Head chef Eddie Shilton uses the very best local produce – with three of the hotel’s suppliers just a minute’s walk away – as well as growing 90 per cent of the green vegetables, salads and herbs used in the restaurant in Battlesteads’ own kitchen gardens and polytunnels. The restaurant offers light lunches and bar snacks, a dinner menu featuring modern British dishes with a few international twists, and, for the ultimate Northumbrian dining experience, an eight-course tasting menu that showcases
the very best local and seasonal produce throughout the year.
DRINK
It’s not just the food at Battlesteads that’s locally sourced – the well-stocked bar also features a rotating series of local beers on tap from the likes of Durham Brewery, Hadrian Border Brewery and High House Farm Brewery, as well as guest ales throughout the year. For wine lovers, Battlesteads offers a wide range of organic, Fairtrade and biodynamic wines, and the bar team can even tell you which are from sustainable and carbon-neutral vineyards. In July, the annual Battlesteads Beer Festival will return for 2018 from Thursday 26 – Sunday 29. Along with local, national and international beers, the ever-popular gin bar will also be back and there will be live music every day.
