Mr and Mrs Punter tuck into seven drinks, seven cheeses and two hours of ‘wonderful’ entertainment at Czerwik, in Brighthouse, West Yorkshire

Us Yorkshire folk are renowned for being, shall we say, not overly extravagant when it comes to financial matters so when we found out that there was a place where you could get an evening of fine wine and delicious cheeses for less than £50pp we were more than willing to pay attention.

So it was that Mrs Punter and I booked for a wine and cheese evening at Czerwik in Brighouse. A family-run business for more than 25 years, it specialises in wines, ports, cheeses, chutneys and associated food and drinks to keep your social life alive and kicking.

As well as corporate hospitality, Czerwik offer wine and cheese evenings at selected times throughout the year. This is how they go:

1 Travel to Brighouse.
2 If you get there early, go to the cocktail bar next door.
3 Go into Czerwick and be greeted by the wonderful John.
4 Spend the next couple of hours:
a. Drinking wine (three white, three red, one beer and a ‘surprise’ drink).
b. Eating cheese (one to match each course).
c. Be entertained and informed by John not only in relation to the drinks offerings but also his ‘eventful’ time treading the boards and being, in his words, ‘a luvvy’.
5 Go down to the wine cellar to:
a. Listen to music.
b. Drink more wine.
c. Peruse their extensive selection.
d. Buy some wine (or don’t).

I am not sure where else in the North of England you can get seven drinks, seven cheeses and more than two hours of wonderful entertainment for the price you would pay at Czerwik. We haven’t had such an entertaining, laid back and informative evening for quite some time.
