From Village Landmark to Destination Dining: The White Swan Reopens in Ampleforth
A much-loved village pub has been given a bold new chapter as The White Swan in Ampleforth officially reopens, now reimagined as a gastropub with a Michelin-trained chef at the helm.
The White Swan has long held a place in the heart of the village, but following a period of closure, it has undergone a thoughtful and ambitious transformation led by local Jamie Buckley and head chef Kieran Duffy.

Jamie began his hospitality career in Ampleforth, before gaining experience at top venues across the UK and abroad, including roles in Amsterdam, New Zealand, and Australia. His passion for wine, cocktails and warm, genuine hospitality developed alongside his travels — and he now returns to his roots with the goal of reviving a beloved community landmark.
Kieran brings a wealth of culinary pedigree, having trained in classical French cooking and worked in several Michelin-starred restaurants across the UK. He has staged at some of the country’s top kitchens and spent time working in France early in his career — a formative experience that continues to shape his approach to bold, flavour-driven dishes grounded in precision and care.
Their shared vision blends relaxed Yorkshire charm with restaurant-quality food, seasonal menus, and a warm welcome — positioning The White Swan as both a community hub and a true destination for food-lovers across the region.
Since reopening in November 2024, The White Swan has quickly gained recognition for its elevated menu and welcoming atmosphere. Guests can expect thoughtfully crafted small plates, refined takes on pub classics, and an à la carte offering that shifts with the seasons. From indulgent Sunday roasts to BBQs in the beer garden and real ale festivals, the pub remains proudly rooted in tradition while looking confidently to the future.

Located in the village of Ampleforth — just outside Helmsley and on the edge of the North York Moors — The White Swan is perfectly placed for those exploring the surrounding area. With popular local walks including routes to Byland Abbey, Ampleforth Woods, Rievaulx Abbey, and Sutton Bank all nearby, it’s an ideal stop-off for walkers, cyclists, and day-trippers. The pub is also just minutes from the start of the Cleveland Way National Trail, making it a sought-after rest point for those exploring the Yorkshire countryside.
Open for lunch and dinner Monday to Sunday, The White Swan offers a large beer garden, a carefully curated wine list, local ales, seasonal specials, and artisan coffee — making it just as suited to a relaxed midweek pint as it is to a celebratory evening out.
