Who is cal byerley? Chef and co-owner of Restaurant Pine, Cal Byerley, is set to appear on the 2024 season of Great British Menu.
Cal Byerley, chef and co-owner of Michelin-starred Restaurant Pine, in Northumberland, is set to appear on the 2024 season of Great British Menu.
He features as one of four chefs representing the North East of England in the regional heats, which starts on January 23 and will see the chefs competing for a place in finals week.
33-year-old Cal, from Northumberland, is competing in his second consecutive year of Great British Menu, and alongside the other North East regional competitors will battle it out for a place in finals week.
Cal said: ‘’I was pretty gutted at just missing out on securing a place for the regional cook-offs for the banquet last year, which is why I took a bit of time to think about things. There wasn’t much in it but on reflection, there were a couple of things I could have done better – and as a result I’m ready to give it another go.
“This year’s theme is pretty epic, so we’ll just have to see where I end up as competing against some of the UK’s best established and up-and-coming chefs.’’
The new series, which starts with the North East of England regional heats, will broadcast on BBC Two, at 8pm, on January 23, with three episodes being shown each week, over a period of nine weeks, covering each regional heat before finals week, before culminating in the banquet.
This year’s theme is celebrating Britain’s success in the Olympics and Paralympics and will come to a head at an event hosted by the British Ambassador to France for Team GB wishing our athletes good luck as they prepare for Paris 2024.
In line with this year’s theme there’s no doubt at all that the competing chefs will up the ante a notch or two to see who can secure a coveted position on the podium as they battle it out to produce dishes to match the brief.
Inspired by the modern Olympics games first hosted in Athens in 1896 and the inspirational British Olympians and Paralympians who have competed across the multitude of disciplines since, we’ll no doubt see the chefs’ imaginations run riot.
The programme format remains the same, with Andi Oliver returning to present the series, with a judging line-up of: Michelin starred, GBM double banquet winner, Tom Kerridge; Restaurateur Nisha Katona, and Comedian and Food Podcast Presenter Ed Gamble.
