Northumberland’s Michelin-starred Pine restaurant has been named as one of the top 10 venues to visit in the UK National Restaurant Awards and is also the UK’s highest NEW entry in the OAD top European restaurants to visit list
The team at Pine restaurant in Northumberland say they are “totally buzzing with excitement” having been included in this year’s UK National Restaurant Awards at number 6.
The restaurant, which was previously listed at number 48 in the influential list of the UK’s 100 top places to dine – which was announced last night – is now at number 6, having been placed higher than The Ritz (number 7); Core by Clare Smyth (number 8); Frog by Adam Handling (number 9); and Claude Bosi at Bibendum (number 16).

Last night Pine learned it is also the UK’s highest new entry in a European list of must-dine restaurants. The Opinionated About Dining (OAD) guide list, drawn up with the help of reviewers worldwide, highly recommends it as one of the top restaurants to visit in Europe, ranking it at number five out of 30 venues, just behind Igniv at the Bad Ragaz resort in Switzerland at number four; Lyst in Velje, Denmark, in third place; Oba in Casas-Ibáñez, Spain, in second and Jan in Munich, Germany in top spot.
Pine’s chef patron Cal Byerley and front of house manager and co-owner Sian Buchan said: ”2023 has been more than a little bit hectic, and that’s being really, really polite!
“To be recognised by some of the most discerning foodies there are is pretty overwhelming, especially in two very significant industry lists. All we can say is that absolutely everyone in the team is totally buzzing with excitement – we’re all made up and it might take a little while for it all to sink in!’’
Pine wasn’t the only North East restaurant to feature in The National Restaurant awards. Kenny Atkinson’s Solstice on Newcastle Quayside, which was recently awarded a Michelin star, ranked at number 17 out of 100 and his House of Tides at number 23. Northumberland’s Hjem came in at number 63 and The Raby Hunt in Darlington at 82.
The National Restaurant Awards are a celebration of places in the UK that make eating out a true pleasure. The list of the 100 best restaurants in the UK is voted for by 200 industry experts from across the UK, including chefs, restaurateurs, critics and food writers.
For the second year running, Ynyshir, in Wales – led by chef and co-owner Gareth Ward – was named the best restaurant in the UK.
Moor Hall in Lancashire came second for another year, while third place went to Da Terra in East London, which climbed 18 places from last year.
