The best city breaks, in my opinion, are the ones where you can immerse yourself in rich history, enjoy outstanding food, and still find time to unwind with a cocktail or two.
Our recent stay at The White Hart Hotel in the historic core of Lincoln ticked all those boxes – and then some.

Nestled just a stone’s throw from the awe-inspiring Lincoln Cathedral, The White Hart Hotel has long been a cornerstone of the city’s hospitality scene. With its enviable position between Lincoln Castle and the Cathedral, it makes a strong first impression. But step inside and you’ll discover that the real charm lies in its bustling atmosphere, beautiful new rooms, and exceptional dining offering.
We stayed for one night in the main hotel but they also have newly unveiled rooms in Leigh Pemberton House, the iconic 16th-century half-timbered building just adjacent to the main hotel. With over 500 years of history behind it – including stints as a merchant’s house, furniture shop, and even the notorious Blue Boy Inn – it’s now been lovingly restored and converted into an annex of four luxurious en-suite rooms.
Our room was cosy with a view out towards the Cathedral and it had everything we needed.

That buzz was evident as soon as we descended to the bar area, where guests were gathered, glasses clinking, and a live musician was creating a wonderfully relaxed post-dinner vibe. There was a real warmth to the place – locals mingling with visitors, couples enjoying drinks, and staff who struck the perfect balance of attentive and unfussy.
The à la carte menu at The White Hart’s restaurant Antlers, is comprehensive with a nod to classic British dining, and a few inventive twists. From snacks like black pudding and Guinness bon bons to hearty White Hart staples such as steak and ale shortcrust pie, there’s something to satisfy all appetites.
We opted to start with the Lincolnshire sausage meat Scotch egg, served with black pudding, mustard mayo, apple and watercress, alongside the dill and citrus salmon gravlax. Both dishes were generously portioned and beautifully presented—easily sharable and a clever way to dodge any potential food envy. The Scotch egg was rich and comforting, the sharpness of the apple and mustard balancing it nicely, while the gravlax was delicate, fresh, and full of zing.

For mains, I couldn’t resist the butter-roasted cod, served with a spring onion croquette and a lavish dollop of caviar for an extra touch of luxury. It was perfectly cooked—flaky and moist—and the croquette added both texture and depth of flavour. My partner went straight for the 8oz fillet steak, which arrived with a mountain of chips generous enough to feed a table of four. Thankfully, the steak was so good it more than justified the portion—succulent, seared beautifully and cooked exactly as requested.
Despite being full, I found room for dessert. I have a personal rule that if sticky toffee pudding is on the menu, it must be ordered—and I’m so glad I did. Rich, spongy, and swimming in a luscious toffee sauce, it was the perfect end to a thoroughly indulgent meal.
After dinner, we took a gentle stroll through the cobbled streets surrounding the hotel. This part of Lincoln is a treasure trove for history lovers. Just a short walk from The White Hart you’ll find Steep Hill, a picturesque ascent lined with independent shops and galleries, recently voted one of England’s most popular historic streets. The Cathedral itself – visible from almost every angle – is a breathtaking sight both day and night, while Lincoln Castle, home to one of the original copies of the Magna Carta, is a must-visit.

If you’re after a nightcap, the area offers a variety of pubs full of character. But for those looking for something livelier, the city centre is only a short walk away and boasts an impressive selection of cocktail bars and late-night spots.
What I loved most about our stay was how well The White Hart balances its rich heritage with modern hospitality. It doesn’t rely on its historic setting alone – it works hard to deliver on comfort, service, and quality. With its newly renovated rooms in Leigh Pemberton House, it now offers even more variety for guests, including exclusive-use options for families or groups, and a total of 53 stylish bedrooms across its portfolio.

If you’re looking for a short break steeped in history, good food, and Lincolnshire charm, The White Hart Hotel makes an excellent choice. Whether you’re here for the views, the cathedral, or simply the sticky toffee pudding – I promise you won’t leave disappointed.
