Tucked away in the picturesque North Yorkshire countryside, Aldwark Manor Estate has long been celebrated for its serene location and luxurious accommodation. But with the introduction of its new fine dining restaurant, Chartwell, the estate has elevated its status to a new level of culinary excellence. The £3 million addition to this historic estate not only pays homage to the timeless glamour of the 1940s but also offers an unparalleled dining experience that is steeped in history, elegance, and an exceptional attention to detail.
As you approach Aldwark Manor Estate, you are greeted by a stunning driveway that winds its way through manicured gardens and lush greenery, immediately setting the tone.
The staff are attentive from the moment you step out of your car to the moment you depart, ensuring that your stay is nothing short of perfect. Their genuine warmth and eagerness to accommodate any request creates a welcoming atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.
Although we were staying the night and there are several places to drink and dine within the hotel, our attention was firmly on Chartwell. Drawing inspiration from Sir Winston Churchill’s iconic country home, promising to bring the spirit of the 1940s to life, the name itself embodies the essence of determination, fine food, and exquisite wines, paying homage to Churchill’s enduring legacy. This historical connection is not just a superficial theme; it permeates every aspect of the dining experience, from the decor to the menu.
The restaurant entrance via the hotel, immediately transports you to an era of sophistication and grandeur. The restaurant’s design is a blend of modern luxury and vintage charm, featuring open glass windows that offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside, mirrored tables that add a touch of glamour, and a hidden bar that adds an element of playful mystery. I won’t tell you where it is, finding it is all part of the fun!
Led by Executive Chef Chris O’Callaghan, who has previously honed his skills at renowned establishments like The Fat Duck, Midsummer House, and Gravetye Manor, the team at Chartwell presents British cuisine with a contemporary twist. The restaurant offers both seven and ten-course tasting menus, each named after Churchill’s favourite indulgences—Champagnes and cigars.
We opted for the ten-course tasting menu paired with a wine flight, and it turned out to be one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in a long time. Each course was a testament to the skill and creativity of the chefs, showcasing locally sourced, seasonal ingredients prepared with classical precision. Standout dishes included the Baked Carrot with Hazelnut Milk and Golden Raisin, a dish that elevated the humble carrot to new heights with its perfect balance of flavours and textures. The Grilled Turbot with Oyster Velouté was another highlight, featuring tender, flaky fish complemented by a luxurious sauce that brought out the delicate flavours of the turbot. The Baron Bigod Crumpet with Honey was a surprise for the tastebuds, combining the rich, creamy texture of the cheese with the sweetness of honey to create a dish that was both comforting and sophisticated.
Chartwell’s wine offerings are equally impressive, featuring a curated list that includes Churchill’s favourite Pol Roger Champagnes. The wine flight that accompanied our tasting menu was thoughtfully selected, enhancing the flavours of each dish and providing a well-rounded experience. For wine enthusiasts, the restaurant also features a wine tasting room named Clem, after Churchill’s wife, Clementine, where guests can sample a range of unique, specially selected wines. This intimate space offers a chance to explore the world of wine in a setting that is both educational and enjoyable.
After dinner, we opted for cocktails in the Squadron Bar, it was the perfect place to end the evening, and had it not been midweek we would probably have tried the whole cocktail list!
Aldwark Manor Estate has truly outdone itself with the addition of Chartwell.
